SMILE, PRK, and ICL are three types of vision correction procedures designed to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. However, they differ in how they correct vision and how the procedures are performed.
SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is a laser vision correction procedure that uses a femtosecond laser to create a small lens-shaped piece of tissue inside the cornea, which is then removed through a small incision. It primarily corrects myopia and astigmatism.
PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is a vision correction procedure that does not involve creating a corneal flap. Instead, the corneal epithelium is removed, and the underlying corneal stroma is reshaped using a laser. Unlike SMILE, PRK does not require the creation of a corneal flap or the removal of a lenticule through an incision. The corneal surface layer needs time to regenerate, so the initial recovery period is generally longer.
ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) is a vision correction procedure that involves implanting a specially designed lens inside the eye without reshaping or removing corneal tissue. There are two types: anterior chamber lenses, which are placed in front of the iris, and posterior chamber lenses, which are placed behind the iris. Depending on the individual's eye condition, ICL may be considered for patients with high myopia or those who are not suitable candidates for corneal laser vision correction.
Each procedure has different eligibility criteria, benefits, and recovery characteristics. A comprehensive eye examination is necessary to determine which option is appropriate for your eyes.
