If you came all the way to Korea thinking about SMILE surgery, but after the examination you are told, “Your cornea is too thin, so it would be better to consider ICL,” you may be taken aback.
However, rather than the surgery you want, it is more important to choose the procedure that is suitable for your current eye condition.
SMILE corrects myopia and astigmatism by removing a lenticule from inside the cornea, so the more severe the myopia, the more the amount of corneal tissue needed for correction must also be considered.
▲ (Left) SMILE (a procedure that uses a femtosecond laser in the corneal stroma to create a lenticule-shaped corneal lenticule, which is then removed through an incision of about 2 mm)
▲ (Right) ICL lens implantation (a procedure that corrects vision by inserting a special corrective lens into the eye without removing corneal tissue)
On the other hand, ICL lens implantation corrects vision by inserting a lens into the eye without removing corneal tissue. Therefore, for some patients with thin corneas or high myopia, the fact that corneal tissue can be preserved may be an advantage of ICL. Of course, not everyone with a thin cornea needs ICL. After checking various factors such as corneal condition and the degree of myopia and astigmatism through a detailed examination, the procedure should be determined.
