Gamcho Injection Hype in Gangnam: What’s Actually Inside?

Gamcho Injection Hype in Gangnam: What’s Actually Inside?

Heard about the “never-aging shot” (불로주사) buzzing in Gangnam? Meet the Gamcho injection (감초주사), a licorice-based shot. Spoiler: no fountain of youth. 🌿

In Korean herbal medicine, licorice (감초) appears in almost every prescription. Koreans call it “the licorice of every pharmacy” (약방의 감초), the reliable supporting player. Now it’s been turned into an injection.

The key ingredient is glycyrrhizin, found in licorice root (about 3–5%). The body converts it to glycyrrhetinic acid. Flavonoids and glabridin (also used in whitening cosmetics) are present too.

Clinics promote it for joint pain, allergies, fatigue, liver “detox,” and skin whitening, but the evidence is limited. Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has issued safety guidance for off-label cosmetic use, and it isn’t covered by insurance.

Glycyrrhizin acts somewhat like a steroid hormone. It can raise blood pressure, make the body retain water, and lower potassium. Low potassium can cause muscle weakness, paralysis, and dangerous heart rhythms. Korean professors have warned.

Extra caution if you have:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart failure or arrhythmia
  • Pregnancy (generally avoid)
  • Licorice or legume allergy
  • Warfarin or digoxin prescriptions

Bottom line: the benefits are unproven, and low potassium is the real risk. Ask a doctor first.
